Earth Day is all about saving, and we think it's important to save your favorite candies from extinction. Over the years, so many delicious, ingenious candies have gone the way of the dinosaurs. We can't take our favorite candy for granted, or we may never see it again.
In the spirit of conservation, we're giving away some great nostalgic candy prizes. It's our way of spreading the love of retro candies and making sure that future generations get to enjoy the same flavors we savor today.
To enter, share your favorite memory of an already extinct candy. Or tell us about the candy you believe should be saved for posterity. Just leave your story in the comments on this post to enter. We'll announce the winners early next week!
Don't forget to do your part for the planet. Buy online to save gas. And always dispose of your wrappers responsibly.
When I was a child, the neighborhood ice cream man, Mike, would always come by and instead of ice cream I would buy candy (on Friday’s he would give us free Jolly Ranchers!!! Best Ice Cream Man EVER!!!). My favorite candy he sold was Tropical Tangy Taffy, I could never find it anywhere else. It wasn’t as sticky as most taffies are, they had a ton of different flavors (I loved them all, but tropical was my all-time favorite) and they were topped with crystal sugar. Mike was such a nice guy that he sometimes had a “sale” and the candy would be buy one get one free and whenever you were short on money, he would let you pay him back the next day. Writing this made me think of 2 great memories, one of course being the Tropical Tangy Taffy and more importantly a kind person who always went out of his way to make a kid’s day. Wherever he is, I hope he is well.
I really miss the original chocolate Now & Later. Not this new soft chewy one though. I LOVED the original and I have absolutely no idea why they stopped making it. If they brought it back I’d buy it by the case. I miss you Orginial Cholocate Now & Later….Please come back….. :-(
I remember before I left to move 1200 miles from my grammie, she gave me a candy bar and said that if I missed her i could eat the candy bar and it would put a smile on my face an remind me of her…and once i got to Mississippi and realized i couldnt just go see her, i opened that candy bar an cried for hours…..
the closest thing i have found to it is now the Hersheys Airdelight……but back then it was called Chocolite………….
Thanks
I honestly have a trio that I want saved…can hardly find them anymore…usually have to order them…Abba Zabba (taffy filled with peanut butter—oh yum), Look (nougat covered with dark chocolate) and Big Hunk (nougat with peanuts in it)…why can’t they be in every store with 3 Musketeers and Snickers? I also miss the 7-Up Bars (they had both dark chocolate and a milk chocolate bar—can anyone name all 7 compartments?)… :P I also loved Fizzies (candy?). I loved Brach’s jelly nougats too. And also one of my favorites was the Jolly Rancher Fire Stick…you can still get the hard candy but not the stick. :( Cup O’Gold candy bar is good too (a chocolate cup filled with marshmallow creme, another sadly almost extinct) and a closely related cousin…Cherry Mountain…oh yummmmm…Can you tell I love candy? Hahaha…I hope I win… Well good memories all…
Fifty or sixty years ago there was a form of Chocolate Licorice that was sold at the Roxy Theater in St. Anthony Idaho. The consistency was similar to what is available now, except in those days the sticks were about five inches long and about an inch wide. Fresh from the box they cost 2 cents apiece which in those days was a lot for penny candy? The best thing, other than the flavor, was when you folded them in two and bit into them, the rush of air and flavor over your tongue, added to the enjoyment. The movie cost 14 cents for the Saturday Matinee and a quarter got you the ticket and a half dozen chocolate licorice sticks with a penny left over toward next weeks movie/licorice costs. Someone need to talk to Farr Candy Company in South Eastern Idaho and see if they were the manufactures and if they are then get them to bring them back and CandyFavorites can then distribute them world wide!
